Natural food cooperatives helps shoppers make informed decisions about Genetically Modified Food (gene or molecule-manipulated food), or GMO Foods.

Genetically modified food (GMO Foods), and nanofood, which are foods produced in a laboratory to perfectly meet set genetic specifications, have some grocery shoppers wondering if food created with this technology is beneficial or harmful to them and their families, according to the National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA), a business services cooperative representing more than 108 food co-ops nationwide.

GM foods, also known as genetically engineered (GE) foods, or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO Foods), have had their genes altered by scientists with the goal of improving the food in some way. Similarly, nanofoods are created by restructuring the food on a molecular or atomic level to improve food safety, enhance nutrition and flavor or cut costs. Natural food cooperative shoppers are skeptical of gene and molecule manipulation for the creation and alteration of food. And, they believe all consumers have a right to know when a food has been created using these technologies.

“The philosophy behind GMO foods and nanofoods contradicts the belief of our members and shoppers that the more natural and unprocessed a food, the better,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA. “Co-op shoppers also want informative package labeling so they can make smart choices about their food purchases. Right now, the USDA certified organic label is the best bet for finding food produced without genetic or molecule manipulation.”

Today, the U.S. allows the following GMO crops in the food and feed supply: alfalfa, canola, chicory, corn, cotton, flax, papaya, potato, rice, soybean, squash, sugarbeet, and tomatoes. Nanoproducts are in some canola oils, slim shakes, breads, additives and supplements, lemonades and juices, margarines, packaging products and coatings. Companies are not required to label products that have been produced with GMO foods or nanotechnology.

Food Co-op Concerns over Genetically Modified Food & Nanofoods

Some of the main reasons NCGA and its food co-op members are concerned about GMO foods and nanofoods include:

  • Burdensome for organic farmers, who can’t detect contaminants in the seed they buy and who have to worry about contamination of crops from neighboring farms. GMO foods and nanofoods are not allowed in the production of organic-certified food.
  • Genetically Modified Food and nanofoods are largely untested. Producers and the government are working under the assumption that if the original food products were safe, then the new product must also be safe. Since the organism has been significantly altered, however, there is no reason to make this assumption.
  • Genetically Modified Food and nanofoods are not labeled as such. Consumers who wish to avoid these foods are not being given this option.
  • Engineered fish may alter ecosystems, perhaps even causing extinction of some wild populations.
  • Introducing GM organisms (GMO foods) into complex ecosystems may cause unforeseen problems, including global side effects.
  • * GMOs may reduce the diversity of plants and jeopardize natural resources.
  • GMO Foods may result in the domination of world food production by a few big companies.
  • Genetically Modified Food may introduce known or unknown allergens.

What Concerned Consumers Can Do…

Concerned consumers should consider supporting:

  • Mandatory testing of all genetically modified foods and nanofoods before they are allowed on the market.
  • Labeling of all nanofoods and foods that have been genetically modified or that use genetically modified organisms during growing, production or packaging. People who may be sensitive to allergens as well as people who are concerned about the risks of GMO foods and nanofoods should have the option of avoiding these foods.
  • Organic farmers. While there’s no guarantee that genetically altered pollen won’t make its way into organic crops, organic producers are committed to ensuring food they produce is grown without the use of GMO foods.
  • Government regulations to protect the food supply and the environment from contamination by genetically modified crops.
  • Strengthened government oversight of the environmental risks of engineered foods.
  • Corporate liability for any damages resulting from the use of GMO foods and nanofoods.
  • The establishment of a reservoir of pure, non-engineered seeds, as recommended by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

1. Genetically modified food was unleashed on the environment and the public by corporations like Monsanto without prior testing to determine their safety.  In other words, eating GMO foods is participating in a long-term and uncontrolled experiment.

  3. Potential health risks of eating GMO foods.
4. Fruits and vegetables are real food, not pesticide factories.  Eighteen percent of all Genetically Modified Food seeds are engineered to produce their own pesticides.  Research shows that these seeds continue producing pesticides inside your body once you’ve eaten the food grown from them!
5. Organic foods are free from neurotoxins – toxins that are damaging to brain nerve cells.  A commonly-used class of pesticides called organophosphates was originally developed as a toxic nerve agent during World War I.  When there was no longer a need for them in warfare, industry adapted them to kill pests on foods.  Many pesticides are still considered neurotoxins.
6. Organic foods are supportive of growing children’s brains and bodies.  Children’s growing brains are far more susceptible to toxins than adults.  Choosing organic helps feed their bodies without the exposure to pesticides and Genetically Modified Food.
7. In study after study, research from independent organizations consistently shows organic food is higher in nutrients than traditional foods.  Research shows that organic produce is higher in vitamin C,anti-oxidants, and the minerals calcium, iron, chromium and magnesium.
8. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that pesticides pollute the primary drinking source for half the American population.  Organic farming is the best solution to the problem.  Buying organic helps reduce pollution in our drinking water.
9. Organic food is earth-supportive.  Organic food production has been around for thousands of years and is the sustainable choice for the future.  Compare that to modern agricultural practices that are destructive of the environment through widespread use of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers and have resulted in drastic environmental damage in many parts of the world.
10. Organic food choices grown on small-scale organic farms help ensure independent family farmers can create a livelihood.
11. Most organic food simply tastes better than the pesticide-grown counterparts.
12. Organic food is not exposed to gas-ripening like some non-organic fruits vegetables (like bananas).
13. Organic farms are safer for farm workers.  Research at the Harvard School of Public Health found a 70% increase in Parkinson’s disease among people exposed to pesticides.  Choosing organic foods means that more people will be able to work on farms without incurring the higher potential health risk of Parkinson’s or other illnesses.
14. Organic food supports wildlife habitats.  Even with commonly used amounts of pesticides, wildlife is being harmed by exposure to them.
15. Eating organic may reduce your cancer risk.  The US EPA considers 60% of herbicides, 90% of insecticides potentially cancer-causing.  It is reasonable to think that the rapidly rates of cancer are at least partly linked to the use of these carcinogenic pesticides.
16. Choosing organic meat lessens your exposure to antibiotics, synthetics hormones, and drugs that find their way into the animals and ultimately into you.
17. Organic food supports greater biodiversity.  Diversity is fundamental to life on this planet.  Genetically Modified Food and non-organic food is focused on high yield mono-culture and is destroying biodiversity.
